SUMMARY:Midweeker with Ben Gathercole
DESCRIPTION:Somewhat reluctantly\, Ben has agreed to sit on the other side of the microphone and answer questions at our first Midweeker for 2024. \nTopics will include Ben’s 30 years in elite sport\, the challenges and triumphs he had along that journey\, and the many lessons learned. Ben will also discuss why he’s at Menslink\, his vision for the future\, and how he plans to make sure we can continue supporting young men in Canberra. \nWhile our Midweekers are usually on a Wednesday\, we purposely chose a Thursday on this occasion to avoid any clashes with Valentine’s Day. We wouldn’t want to interrupt anyone’s romantic plans!

SUMMARY:Midweeker with Wally Rao
DESCRIPTION:Wally is the “accidental mentor” who helps more young people daily than he cares to admit. His booming hello of “Hey champion” is a hallmark of a visit to his cafe\, Deakin & Me \n  \nWally’s coffee and cafe journey started with his parents owning and operating one of the original cafes in Petrie Plaza in the mid 60’s called the “chuck wagon”. Wally learnt from his immigrant parents the value of hard work and a friendly smile. The big step in Wally’s cafe journey was moving into his own shops starting at the University of Canberra\, onward to EQ in Deakin\, and now back in the business at Deakin & Me. \n  \nWally’s personality and kind spirit have enabled him to help many young blokes either in their first job or just a friendly greeting. Our very own Mentor Master\, Des Linahan has been trying to persuade Wally for years to come on board with us. There’s still a chance\, but Wally is happy to share his thoughts and personal story about his journey\, the resilience required\, and the anxiety around a lifetime in a small Canberra business at our next Midweeker. \n  \nJoin us on Wednesday 15 November\, 6pm to 7pm at the Statesman Hotel at Curtin to listen to Wally as he shares some insights and learnings from years behind the coffee machine.

SUMMARY:Midweeker with Francis Owusu
DESCRIPTION:Francis Owusu has used his love of dance to stimulate others to build their confidence and self-belief\, as it did for him. A child of Ghanaian parents\, Francis grew up in Victoria where he endured racism born of ignorance which almost propelled him towards a life of crime. \n  \nMoving to Canberra he turned his life around through dance\, going on to study finance banking at university by day and exploding on stage by night as a member of the band 925. He has worked with major recording artists Marcia Hines\, Jon Stevens and Guy Sebastian during his career. Driven by a determination to share his good fortune\, he organised after-school dance classes for children. \n  \nOver the past decade\, Francis and Kulture Break have performed with thousands of children in schools\, community centres and jails\, inspiring and motivating them. For Francis\, Kulture Break is a reflection of his belief that life is not characterised by what you have received but what you can give. \n  \nJoin us for the next Menslink Midweeker on Wednesday 11 October\, 6pm to 7pm at the Statesman Hotel.

SUMMARY:Menslink Business Breakfast 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Menslink Business Breakfast is our annual fundraising event and draws nearly five hundred leaders from across Canberra to hear from inspiring speakers\, network with other community-minded people\, and support the great work of Menslink. \n  \n\nMenslink is proud to announce Michael Coutts-Trotter as our guest speaker for the 2023 Business Breakfast. Michael has recently been confirmed as the Secretary of NSW Treasury to the new Chris Minns NSW Government. \n\n\nMichael’s past has been written and spoken about extensively. Arriving from England as a young guy\, he lost his father to cancer at a young age\, fell into the trap of drugs and dealing\, which lead to a stint in jail and rehab.  His self-determination and the support around him led to his famed redemption and a path back into professional life with the NSW Government. Michael’s journey is about resilience\, strength\, courage and being given a second chance. \n\n  \nThe Business Breakfast is held each year in September and is attended by executives from large and small businesses\, government\, sports\, education and the community sector. Both Federal and Territory politicians from all major parties also attend to show their support for Menslink and the young men in our community. \n  \nTo buy a table at the event\, click here.

SUMMARY:Midweeker with Ben Alexander
DESCRIPTION:A long-term mate of Menslink\, Ben Alexander\, is kicking things back off for us in August. \nOver a stellar rugby union career that spanned 10 years\, Ben Alexander played 72 tests for the Australian Wallabies and became the ACT Brumbies most capped player after 154 games. When he retired in 2018\, he was a much-loved member of the Brumbies team whose impact on the field would be missed. But what was ahead for him post-rugby was going to require more strength than packing down in a scrum against the All Blacks. \nBen’s talk will share the personal challenges and hurdles he has faced since his retirement and the effort it’s taken to jump the hurdles in his way. For Ben\, the big thing was discovering who he was outside of “Ben the Rugby player” and finding pride in different areas of his life including launching his Alfred app  and his successful hospitality business The Dock in Kingston. (Image credit: The Canberra Times) \n  \nJoin us on August 9th 2023  at the Statesman Hotel in Curtin to meet Ben and hear him talk. \nMid Weekers are proudly supported by Lennock Volkswagen.   \n
