Ben Henderson probably never imagined that a mosquito would be the cause of his toughest battle. That an insect would threaten his mountain biking career and leave him bed ridden, unable to do anything on his own. Ben Henderson was riding for a spot at the 2012 London Olympics when a mosquito bite quickly halted his riding career.
While racing on Malaysian island Langkawi in 2011, Ben was bitten more than 50 times and contracted the Chikungunya virus and Epstein-Barr virus. The rare disease left this elite athlete bed ridden for six months and Ben battled chronic fatigue for a further two years before being able to ride competitively again.
Ben’s attitude of ‘whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ has seen him go on to run a half marathon.
