John Runko is CEO of the Independent Property Group and has been involved in the property industry in Canberra for over 25 years, starting at Reg Daly Real Estate (which evolved into Independent Property Group) as a sales trainee, and working his way up the ladder.
As a very young man, he and his wife bought two hairdressing salons and ran them as successful businesses, then sold up to buy a small motel on the South Coast. This turned out to be a whole other ball game with such seasonal business in a very different industry and they headed back to Canberra, after selling at a loss.
While looking for a new home for his wife and young children, John noticed that even though the local real estate agents were providing pretty poor service, they were driving very nice cars. He thought he ought to be able to do at least as well as they did, and he made the decision to move over to the world of real estate.
John is a strong advocate for the community sector. He is on the board of Directors at Communities@Work, and the Independent Property Group Foundation has distributed over half a million dollars across a number of worthy organisations in the Canberra region, including The Yellow Van, Boundless Canberra, The Canberra Hospital Foundation, ACT Down Syndrome Association and St John’s Care.
Midweekers are available to women and men of all ages who want to come and listen to inspiring stories from our local men, as well as to understand some of the key issues facing young guys in our region. You don’t have to be a guy to come to a Midweeker – just interested in supporting young guys and their families.
Hopefully we can see you there…
